The Written Letter
Since I was young enough to remember, I loved peeking into our mailbox, hoping to see a letter with my name written on it. A letter, just for me!! I loved the feel of it, felt so proud someone cared enough to write and couldn’t wait to open it.
This love of letters has never left me. Even as more and more bills came instead of personal letters, I still loved opening that mailbox. When I was at Hope, I would check my mailbox at least twice a day. I even hounded the mail person, or offered to get the mail for the office!
As personal letters become almost extinct, I feel a sad pang of losslessness. Emails are faster, cheaper and more efficient, but have we exchanged the personal touch and thoughtful written word for efficiency? I miss holding a piece of paper that someone has spent time and energy to use a pen to write by hand. Their handwriting shows their personality, shows their emphasis, shows they care.
So I offer this up to you. If someone is hurting, if you want to encourage someone, or just to tell someone you love them, don’t shoot them an email conveniently. Take the time to think out your letter and write it. It means a lot and makes a whole load of difference.
