Fun with Podiatry

I’m a specialist girl.

I’ve see the Ophthalmologist, Gastroengologist and the Podiatrist. (And who says I don’t support the medical community.)

My adventures with the Podiatrist started yearsssssssssss ago, when I was a little girl (Ahh, I miss those days). My leg (esp the knees) used to have stabbing pains almost everyday and I would literally cry myself to sleep. My parents and I were baffled. Doctor after doctor couldn’t explain why and all that was accomplished was $$ down the drain. Until, someone told us about a Podiatrist (basically a specialist of the foot, ankle and related issues). That was the first we’ve heard of it, but we went to see him anyway. And boy, he was a life-saver!

Dr Tye Lee Tze of The Podiatry Centre was the first Podiratrist in Singapore. When we went to see him, he had just set up his practice. He was the first to know exactly what was happening and told us it could be easily fixed. EASILY FIXED!! After alllll those misdiagnosis and wasted $$?

Apparently, I had high-arched feet. And as such, I couldn’t walk properly on the ground, which strained my bones, knees, etc. So with custom-made insoles and a good New Balance walking shoe, the pain stopped. Just like that. After a few years, the doctor said my feet had developed properly and I didn’t need to see him anymore. So years past, with no pain, no insoles.

Turn the page to a month ago. I started exercising, just normal walking for half an hour. Guess what happened? The pain came back (only less pain since my tolerance level is much higher now)! ARGHHHHHH!! So after yearssssss of not seeing him, I went back to Dr Tye. Now, because my feet is weird (narrow heel, broad front), I have to wear another insole. Meaning, no more nice but bad-for-feet shoes (No high heels, no fashion shoes). Well, at least I can save money on shoes now.

Anyhoo, longggg story short, if your feet is hurting consistently, I highly recommend Dr Tye. He’s caring, kind, easy to talk too, explains things veryyyy well and knows what he is doing.

As a plus size woman, I’ve gotten my fair share of criticisms, insults and ‘well-meaning advice’ from my relatives all the way to a random taxi driver.

Over the years, I’ve learnt how to ignore them or insult the person back (the latter is more fun for me). Of course, it still hurts.

So to well-meaning individuals out there, here’s my take on what NOT to say:

1) “You’re Fat/Overweight.” duh. I know that! No need to tell me the obvious. Most guilty of this are the sales aunties or sales ladies from China. Now, how is that an effective sales tool?

2) “Why don’t you wanna lose weight? You like being fat?” No, I don’t actually like being overweight. Neither do I hate it. It just… is. Of course, I don’t like the fact that good clothes are tough to find in Singapore. And that everyone is a size zero. Or that I get tired from walking up a flight of stairs.

3) “(Without any invitation) Here’s what you can do to lose weight.” Thank you but no thank you. I KNOW what to do to lose weight. I AM doing them. But isn’t going to happen overnight, so don’t expect instant results. I’m not about to become someone obsessed over my weight and looks just because society thinks I should. I am more than my weight.

4) “If you remain fat, you’re gonna die.” We’re ALL gonna die someday. Fat or not.

5) “If you’re like that, no guy will like you.” Now this annoys me. Firstly, not all guys are that shallow (as the person who said that thinks). Second, if a guy doesn’t like me purely based on my looks, well then, no loss of mine, right?

6) “You’ll be pretty if you lose weight.” I think I’m pretty now. And who says being skinny automatically makes you pretty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn’t it? And True Beauty is not what’s on the surface.

7) “I’m soooo fat! (Coming from a skinny girl’s mouth)” Excuse me? If you’re fat, than I’m what. Ginormous? Thanks a lot.

Now if I want to lose weight primarily to look pretty and have guys like me, then losing weight won’t work will it? But if I mainly want to lose weight because I wanna take care of this God-given body, then that’s more lasting.

So please, before you open your mouth, think before you talk.

nea smoke free poster Yay to a Smoke free Singapore

Kudos to the National Environmental Agency in Singapore who is making more places smoke-free. I hope that Singapore will eventually become totally smoke-free. No smokers. It’ll help their health and save their $$. Also, keep the air cleaner.

Plus, I won’t have to be forced to breathe in those toxic fumes just because someone else has no regard for his/her own body. I especially hate it when smokers smoke right outside the entrance/exit of a place, practically forcing me to breathe in the poison if I want to enter the place.

My logic, “You wanna kill yourself slowly? Fine. Just don’t kill me too.”

Listen to this man!

The US Elections is almost over. It seems Obama has won. While I’m personally elated about that, two people today have put it in perspective for me. Shaun Groves and Lizzie.

Regardless of who won, God is still in control. This is after all, a human system. One that is inherently flawed simply because humans created it. Whether Republican or Democrat or Independent, these are human labels. What’s important is that God can and will still do His Will through His people, even through those whom we don’t feel can be used.

So, whether you’re happy or sad, Celebrate. As Shaun Groves wrote: “Celebrate that regardless of who becomes president, God is still King.

Oh. My. Gosh.

I just saw the most beautiful gadget I’ve ever seen in a longgggg time. It’s beautiful, it’s highly functional, it’s gorgeous, it’s a phone to salivate over.

Samsung Omnia

The New Samsung Omnia. It’s launching next week, but I got to play with one during a trade show today.

The picture doesn’t even do it justice. This is one phone you’ll have to use to know how great it is.

It’s a billion times better than the iPhone. The iPhone is not even in its league. I want this phone. It’s going to be expensive!! I hope by the time I can upgrade my phone in September, the price will be a bit more within my range. I hope!

Sigh… *I’m dreaming*

People ask me why I don’t like going out during the weekends, why I love staying at home. It’s not so much that I love staying at home, it’s more that i hate travelling in Singapore. Our convenient public transport is becoming a nightmare to travel in.

On the MRT (train) and bus, we are packed like sardines, even on so call off-peak periods. People lose their sense of common courtesy, shoving each other around just so they can be comfortable. Thoughtless teenagers blast their music so loud that everyone can hear, giving others a headache especially since their music is stupid brainless heavy metal or rap. Well-abled people refuse to give up their seats to people who need it more – old people and pregnant ladies. They pretend to sleep, read their newspaper or worst, just stare defiantly at other people, knowing that they are in the wrong, but not caring anyway.

Our once affordable taxis (cabs) are ridiculously expensive now, and a lot of the taxi drivers are reckless and dangerous, leaving me with a fear for my life throughout the entire journey.

Driving myself is even worst. It’s dangerous and very stressful to drive here. The selfish mentality is so obvious on the roads, people tailgating you, cutting into your lane without warning, and without enough space to even sanely attempt a cut, causing me to brake suddenly. Road accidents and road rage are on the raise. People are rushing to make money, rushing to spend money, rushing to earn more money. Let me also mention how ridiculously expensive driving a car is now. The “wonderful”, money-loving government puts up all these ERPs (electronic road payment) gantries everywhere! Where it was once used to regulate traffic in the city area, it is now used as a money making tool for an already absurbly rich government.

The situations on the roads and in public transport are a clear picture of the selfishness and greediness of Singaporeans today, both of the people and the government. Where I was once proud to be a Singapore, I am now becoming ashamed, reluctant to associate myself with a nation of money-grabbing, think-only-for-myself people. If given a chance to go overseas to work, I would probably take it without a glimmer of regret. I have lived in another country and though it has its faults, at least the people in the place where I lived were caring and loving, knowing that there was more to life than just money and “me”. The only thing keeping me here now is my love for my family and friends. My love for my country has been progressively destroyed by its people and government, ever since I returned to find that my beloved country has deteoriated in morals and values.

I believe that a country, no matter how rich, without its morals, integrity and values will sink and die fast. Unfortunately, I already see that happening here.
