Day 1
We arrived early morning, tired and drained from the 13 hours of flying in a crammed and recycled-air plane. After an amazingly fast custom clearance, we hopped on the underground (train station, like Singapore’s MRT, but more intricate and complex) and navigated through its many stairs, tunnels and walkways, till we finally made it to our hotel (after another 15 minutes of walking from the station).

Our London hotel, Oxford Hotel, is small, but clean. The staff? Friendly. I took a much needed shower, glad to be clean of the dirt of the plane and relaxing under the hot water.

Then it was off to the half price ticket booth to see what cheaper tickets we could get for a drama, musical, etc. We ended up choosing “A Woman in Black,” a thriller, or so we thought. It ended up being a horror drama acted out by 2 men on a bare stage. And boy, they were GOOD!!! Their acting was solid, terrifying at times, so convincing that they had the audience gasping, jumping in time with them! Everyone was on the edge of our seats, and my heart was beating so heavily by the time of the intermission. Turns out this drama has been running in for 20 years. If you ever go to London, go see this play. You won’t regret it.

Day 2
Jet lag set in. I woke up at 3AM London time, 10AM Singapore time. Went back to bed after a while and woke up at 7:30AM London time.

After a very bare breakfast in the hotel (well, we get what we paid for… and we didn’t pay much for London lodging), we headed off for the half price ticket booth AGAIN. Did I mention that I have only 2 goals in London?

1. To see as many theatre productions as possible.
2. To go to the British Museum

Goal 1 is well on the way to being fulfilled.

We settled on The Mousetrap, based on the novel by Agatha Christie. Before that, we walked around Trafalgar Square, went to St. Martin’s Church and just enjoyed the sites and sounds. My mom and I went back to our hotel in the afternoon for a break, my dad and brother ventured onto to other sites.

After a good long nap, I woke up refreshed, my aching back much better. The plane journey has knocked my back out and all the walking about had aggravated it.

Then it was The MouseTrap drama. Nice set, good actors, good storyline. But the suspense wasn’t as good as the night before. Halfway through, I guessed who the killer was, and I wasn’t as captivated as I could have been. But overall, not a bad play.

And then the Debby blundering began. I had put our room key in the inner picket of my jacket… that didn’t have a zip, only a button. Well, guess what, it fell out of the pocket when I took off my jacket as the theatre. Only realized it one or two train stops away. So back my brother and I rushed to the theatre. Climbing up a super long and steep escalator, of which I nearly keeled over from the effort. The theatre was closed, no one seemed to be around. My heart dropped. I ran around the back, hoping to see someone. Someone was just leaving the stage door. I ran up and begged him to let us find out key. Thankfully, they had done a check through the seats after the show and someone had found the key! PHEW!! I came out of that incident with 2 valuable lessons.

1. Always put the key in a pocket that ZIPS close.
2. Never try and run up a steep, long escalator. I thought my heart was going to fall out of my chest!

Day 3
British Museum is HUGE!! By this time, my muscles and bones are so sore from all the walking and stairs climbing, that I had to stop every 5 minutes to sit down. And the museum doesn’t have many seats!

We only managed to look at 3 exhibitions – The Egyptian, Greek & Asian parts. I loved the Greek gallery the best. All the stuff that the British stole was bestowed upon by the nations they conquered lovingly entered. They had a pillar here, an obelisk there. Even took an entire humongous tomb and reassembled it in the museum.

Greek Tomb

Greek Horse

In the evening, my parents went to see The Lion King, the musical, and my brother and I saw A Little Night Music, another musical. Our play was good, with the exception of a lady in front of my brother with a huge curly hairstyle that blocked his view!

Day 4
Another musical… this time, one that I’ve been waiting for since a few years back. WICKED!!! Oh, the set was beautiful. The music was great! The singers amazing! Only annoying thing? Younger theatre-goings who didn’t know theatre etiquette. Standing up in the middle of the play to go to the bathroom, standing on the corridors that blocked everyone else. So rude!!!

During the day, my brother and dad went exploring around London. My mom and I stayed back in the hotel, resting and enjoying not having to do anything. Ahhhh, this is the life!

Cinderella Play Review

CinderellaI just came back from the Cinderella Play at the Esplanade, featuring Lea Salonga. It was my treat for my parents and I got us realllllyy good seats. I could see all the actors’ faces so clearly!

The play is a light-hearted and fun play on the classic fairytale, with lines and scripts that insert current events and modern day behaviour. Lea Salonga plays Cinderella (duh!). It got off to a slow start, and if I might say, a tad boring. It did pick up around the mid of the 1st act with the fairy god-mother, played by Charlie Parker, doing her magic and making Cinderella’s wish come true. Now, the fairy god-mother is HILARIOUS!! She would make funny comments and actions that made me laugh. In fact, my favourite line in the whole play was “Some people are so dumb!” by the god-mother, referring to the prince and cinderella.

Lea Salonga was amazing, as usual. Her voice was so clear and I could hear every single word she sang (some others left me struggling to figure out what they were saying). The prince, Peter Saide, was charming and… TALL! When he was dancing with Lea Salonga, the height difference was so apparent. He had to bow down a little. She was almost on her tippy toes! My mom also commented that in some scenes, Peter Saide looked like Jim Carrey!! haha!

The stepsisters and stepmothers were really played over the top, in a funny way! I loved the exaggeration of the characters, with Portia being this almost blind idiot, and Joy being a miserable, spiteful, unjoyful person. (Note the play on their names… the total opposites to their meanings!).

The sad thing was that the theatre wasn’t remotely full. There were so many empty seats, I felt so bad for the cast and crew. I guess when they planned this run, they didn’t anticipate the economic crisis hitting. Also, I think the run of this play is too long – 20 days! It might have been better if they played for 10 days and gotten a better crowd for each show.

The play is still running in Singapore, Esplanade Theatre until Jan 20. So if you want a fun time, go see it!

Additional Note: I forgot to mention that the props and set were very well done. I especially loved the dresses in the wedding scene. The blue and white gowns were soooo gorgeous. I want one of those!

The stage was a bit narrow though and that became apparent during the dancing scene in the ball. The dancers had to dance carefully and nearly banged into each other a few times.

Major Makeover!

A month ago, I decided to get a customised design for my blog to meet my multiple wants. While I could have easily designed it myself, the wordpress coding and css would have given me a massive headache… and taken forever. So out I went into cyberspace, searching high and low for a wordpress designer who was affordable, had a design style that I liked and was available to take on my project.

And… I found Designed by Lara! The more I saw her portfolio, the more I got excited! I found her! THE designer who would give me the amazing design I imagined. Only, it wasn’t an amazing design… It was a MOST amazing design. (note, wrong use of grammar here. I apologise.)

She’s really fast! And professional! And she put up with my annoying changes and anal view on alignments. So that puts her pretty high in my “Great people to work with” book. (Ok, I don’t have such a book. But if I did, she’ll be high up there.)

So, here’s my new look! I promise, I won’t keep changing my look like I’ve done previously. I might tweak some colour here and there according to my moods and the time of the year, but the overall design is here to stay!

Oh, and look at my nice siggy!

Wohoo!

Plus Size? Yes please!

One tough thing about coming back to Singapore was the lack of good quality, stylish and age-appropriate clothes for my size. The majority of people here are skinny, size 0 skinny, and most retailers only stock for those sizes. When I do find clothes my size, more often than not, they are more suited for “aunties”, being baggy, old-fashioned, and definitely not flattering. It got so difficult once when I was looking for a good business suit, that it took 3 days, and hours and hours of walking and frustration before I found a place that sold American plus sized suits that made me happy to wear them, instead of feeling frumpy.

So it was almost like a miracle when I found this tiny boutique that not only sold beautiful clothes my size, but also designed and made them just for our body types! For once in Singapore, the ladies behind this store understood the predicament of women like me and solved our problems! Their clothings are soooo beautiful and gorgeous, that even skinny women wanna wear them… but too bad! You’re too small! (I can’t believe that I can say that! It’s usually, “you’re too big!” or the ruder sales ladies will say, “you’re too fat.”)

Anyway, if you want cute, fashionable, good quality clothes in Singapore, check them out at:

ATTITUDE PLUS BOUTIQUE
Marina Square #03-232

Their stock is limited, but they are expanding. So I always make sure to check them out once in a few months to grab their new stock while they last.

Sweet Sweet Jewelry

sage 210x300 Sweet Sweet JewelryI love earrings. I love long necklaces. I love it even more when they are handmade, nickel-free and absolutely beautiful.

I found this blog selling hand-made, unique jewelry while surfing on facebook one day. Over the last few months, my jewelry mannequin has been slowly filled up with gorgeous earrings that make me feel happy wearing them.

I’ve also made friends with the person behind them, Yan. She’s really sweet and has even genevieve1 150x150 Sweet Sweet Jewelrymade a necklace just for me, based on my taste. The stones and pieces she uses are high quality, unique and taseful. She even changes the hook to nickel-free silver for me, as my skin can’t handle nickel.

I love her stuff so much that I had to put a only-one-pair-of-earrings-a-month policy into place. If not, I would be buying most of them in one shot. haha.

So, if you love beautiful, quality jewelry, I suggest you head over to Sweet N0things and take a look. I’m sure you’ll fall in love with something over there.

To Kill A Mockingbird Play

This afternoon I went to the theatre to see “To Kill A Mockingbird,” a play adapted from the classic book by Harper Lee. This play was produced by Sharon Ang and directed by Chris Jacobs.

I’ve studied this book as a literature text during my secondary school days and loved it. The plot, the issues, the characters and the lessons in this story touched my heart, while making my sense of justice rise up. I felt mad, sad, angry and happy – all in one book.

The play itself was very well done. The props were simple, in fact almost non-existent except for 3 ramps across the stage. But I didn’t care, in fact I liked the effect. It allowed me to focus on the characters and their words.

I loved that they kept true to the story, keeping the vital scenes and words in, stringing all of them together smoothly. The actor who played Atticus Finch, Gerald Chew, was perfect for the role and portrayed the personality and mannerism of the lawyer very well. The two ladies who played young and older Jean Louise aka Scout Finch, Lum Kay Li and Yeo Yann Yann, were true to the characters. I loved it that the younger Scout Finch couldn’t shut up or was so naive and innocent at times, which was the impression I got of her when I read the book.

The only complains I have were the play venue and the audience. The play venue had old chairs that were very uncomfortable and didn’t help my bad back one bit. They were also tiny, which meant that I was banging into other people while trying to get comfy. The audience was filled with school-going teenagers, probably sent here by their school. Most didn’t have any theatre-etiquette – talking, and messaging on their handphones during the play – and they couldn’t appreciate the intense moments of fear, excitement, anger, etc. They laughed during those scenes, ruining the atmosphere for me and causing me to not be able to hear the characters talk. I also think that it is rude and an insult to the actors to laugh during these scenes, as though you are saying that their acting was ludicrious. I’m probably not going to a matinee again. Instead, I’ll take the evening ones, where more adults who can behave attend.

Overall, though, I had a great time and I recommend people to go read the book or see the play if it runs near you. For Singaporeans, the play runs till 23 August. You can book tickets here.

I just returned from a theatre production of Little Women, the classic written by Louisa M. Alcott. It was staged by a group of amateur actors (amateur in terms of doing it for free, not amateurish) from The Stage Club. It was a well done production, full of funny moments and good acting. The script basically took the highlights of the book and strung it together, which was great, because the book is long and putting everything in it would have been too much to handle in a theatre performance.

Watching the production made me yearn to get back into acting. I did it for a few years then I stopped because of growing school committments, but I’ve always loved the thrill of being someone else for a moment, performing in front of a crowd and just working together as a team to put up an amazing performance.

The Stage Club is asking for volunteers for performers and backstage work. And I’m thinking that I just might sign up. Force myself to get off my butt and stop being lazy, and to go out and enjoy life. I’m young and single, and should be exploring different areas of my interests and life now. Let’s hope I’ll have the guts to go through with it tomorrow, after I’ve had a night’s sleep.
