Fun with Podiatry

I’m a specialist girl.

I’ve see the Ophthalmologist, Gastroengologist and the Podiatrist. (And who says I don’t support the medical community.)

My adventures with the Podiatrist started yearsssssssssss ago, when I was a little girl (Ahh, I miss those days). My leg (esp the knees) used to have stabbing pains almost everyday and I would literally cry myself to sleep. My parents and I were baffled. Doctor after doctor couldn’t explain why and all that was accomplished was $$ down the drain. Until, someone told us about a Podiatrist (basically a specialist of the foot, ankle and related issues). That was the first we’ve heard of it, but we went to see him anyway. And boy, he was a life-saver!

Dr Tye Lee Tze of The Podiatry Centre was the first Podiratrist in Singapore. When we went to see him, he had just set up his practice. He was the first to know exactly what was happening and told us it could be easily fixed. EASILY FIXED!! After alllll those misdiagnosis and wasted $$?

Apparently, I had high-arched feet. And as such, I couldn’t walk properly on the ground, which strained my bones, knees, etc. So with custom-made insoles and a good New Balance walking shoe, the pain stopped. Just like that. After a few years, the doctor said my feet had developed properly and I didn’t need to see him anymore. So years past, with no pain, no insoles.

Turn the page to a month ago. I started exercising, just normal walking for half an hour. Guess what happened? The pain came back (only less pain since my tolerance level is much higher now)! ARGHHHHHH!! So after yearssssss of not seeing him, I went back to Dr Tye. Now, because my feet is weird (narrow heel, broad front), I have to wear another insole. Meaning, no more nice but bad-for-feet shoes (No high heels, no fashion shoes). Well, at least I can save money on shoes now.

Anyhoo, longggg story short, if your feet is hurting consistently, I highly recommend Dr Tye. He’s caring, kind, easy to talk too, explains things veryyyy well and knows what he is doing.

As a plus size woman, I’ve gotten my fair share of criticisms, insults and ‘well-meaning advice’ from my relatives all the way to a random taxi driver.

Over the years, I’ve learnt how to ignore them or insult the person back (the latter is more fun for me). Of course, it still hurts.

So to well-meaning individuals out there, here’s my take on what NOT to say:

1) “You’re Fat/Overweight.” duh. I know that! No need to tell me the obvious. Most guilty of this are the sales aunties or sales ladies from China. Now, how is that an effective sales tool?

2) “Why don’t you wanna lose weight? You like being fat?” No, I don’t actually like being overweight. Neither do I hate it. It just… is. Of course, I don’t like the fact that good clothes are tough to find in Singapore. And that everyone is a size zero. Or that I get tired from walking up a flight of stairs.

3) “(Without any invitation) Here’s what you can do to lose weight.” Thank you but no thank you. I KNOW what to do to lose weight. I AM doing them. But isn’t going to happen overnight, so don’t expect instant results. I’m not about to become someone obsessed over my weight and looks just because society thinks I should. I am more than my weight.

4) “If you remain fat, you’re gonna die.” We’re ALL gonna die someday. Fat or not.

5) “If you’re like that, no guy will like you.” Now this annoys me. Firstly, not all guys are that shallow (as the person who said that thinks). Second, if a guy doesn’t like me purely based on my looks, well then, no loss of mine, right?

6) “You’ll be pretty if you lose weight.” I think I’m pretty now. And who says being skinny automatically makes you pretty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn’t it? And True Beauty is not what’s on the surface.

7) “I’m soooo fat! (Coming from a skinny girl’s mouth)” Excuse me? If you’re fat, than I’m what. Ginormous? Thanks a lot.

Now if I want to lose weight primarily to look pretty and have guys like me, then losing weight won’t work will it? But if I mainly want to lose weight because I wanna take care of this God-given body, then that’s more lasting.

So please, before you open your mouth, think before you talk.

nea smoke free poster Yay to a Smoke free Singapore

Kudos to the National Environmental Agency in Singapore who is making more places smoke-free. I hope that Singapore will eventually become totally smoke-free. No smokers. It’ll help their health and save their $$. Also, keep the air cleaner.

Plus, I won’t have to be forced to breathe in those toxic fumes just because someone else has no regard for his/her own body. I especially hate it when smokers smoke right outside the entrance/exit of a place, practically forcing me to breathe in the poison if I want to enter the place.

My logic, “You wanna kill yourself slowly? Fine. Just don’t kill me too.”

Works of God Weekend

This week’s WOGW is about the little things.

1. I thank God I have a secure job in thie economic mess.

2. I thank God that my body is stronger and able to handle the chronic gastric much better.

3. I thank God that my parents are back safely from China. I missed my mom tons! (Also loved all the goodies they brought back!)

4. I thank God for His blessings to allow me to wake up every morning and be able to live life well.

5. I thank God for good friends (both off-line and on-line) who never fail to encourage me with their testimony and words.

6. I thank God for giving me the ability to be a blessing for others, and pray that I’ll never take credit for all the things He uses me to do.

Works of God Weekend

It’s been a while since I did this, and I do feel bad about it, since there have been many things to thank God for over the last few weeks.

1. Thank God for my new supervisor. She’s great to work with, fun to hang out with and the sweet part is, she lives near me! So I get free rides home almost every night when her hubby comes to pick her up! WOHOO!

2. My work projects are going smoothly and one major one is almost done. I’m ready to be done with it, after all the hair-pulling and teeth-gnashing moments.

3. My grandmother’s domestic help, Annabelle, is learning to bake, and boy, I’m loving it! She’s spoiling me with all the baking goodies! Ahhh… need to exercise more before I turn into a round bun myself.

4. My doggy is becoming more disciplined and training. Now she sits and stays very well and listens to us. She now knows the tone of my voice where I’m warning her not to do something she’s tempted to do (like go through my socks and chew them up). I’m happy because its easier to enjoy her now without having to scold her so much. she still loves to nibble feet so I’m trying to break that bad habit.

5. The Lord has given me great opportunities to assist others in small ways. And boy, the Lord is really creative with the methods with which He uses through me to add joy in other people lives. I’m having fun while doing them too!

6. My gastritis is well under control. My tummy is stronger and I can eat fried and spicy foods in small dosages once in a while. It also can handle upsets a lot better, which means I’m no more wringing in pain.

The Lord has been GREAT and His grace and mercy in the little things make up a huge blessing on the larger scale.

I’m feeling much better! Pain-free for about a week now and it’s amazing! I’ve never realised how much of a blessing it was to go throughout my day without any pain!! Thank the Lord!!

I’ve learnt a few things from this:

1.  Who needs to pay tons for money for slimming pills and sessions when chronic gastritis can do what they can and so much more… for FREE (minus doctor’s fees, medicines, etc.)

2. Chinese medicine, although terribly bitter and hard to drink, works 100000x better than English medicine… and so much cheaper! Oh, and NO SIDE EFFECTS!

3. Alkaline water really does make a difference compared to drinking normal acidic water from the tap.

4. Non-fried and non-spicy food can be equally, if not more, yummy! I’m finding myself craving fried and spicy food less! Although I do miss the roti prata and curry puff. And Fried Chicken. The credit mostly goes to my grandmother’s helper, Ms. Annabelle from Philippines. She cooks yummy food!

Valuable life lessons I tell you! :)

26February2008

I feel like 50.

I’m 22 years old stuck in a 50 years old body. At least that’s what I feel like. To add to my wonderful gastritis problem, I’m having horrible migraines that feel like someone’s using an axe and hacking away at my head. And because of gastritis, I can’t take too much pain killers so the pain in my head keeps escalating till I want to bash a wall with it. It’s a never-ending cycle of pain.

When I do feel better, I’m dizzy and weak. I don’t think I’ve truly felt healthy and well in the last month or so. It’s one kind of problem or the either. I’ve given up on Western medicine because it just tackles the symptoms and makes me feel weaker. So it’s now bitter Chinese medicine that I pray will solve my health issues and get me fit again.

Please pray for me. It’s truly a taxing and draining time now. Thanks.

I’m 22 and my health is going downhill fast. My chronic gastritis is causing hours of pain, sleepless nights and the inability to go to work. So far, I’ve taken 3 days of medical leave because of chronic gastritis. To say that gastritis is causing endless pain in more ways than one is an understatement.

The funny thing is that it only started happening when I came back from the US. Is it the spices? The asian flavours that triggered it? But why not before I left? Did the US food dull my stomach’s tolerance for home food?

I’ve not been totally disciplined with my food intake and any one indiscretion triggers a tidal wave of pain. So now, I have to totally cut out oily food…. meaning all the fried food that I love! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! That’s horrible! AHHHHHHHH!! My fried fooooddddddddddddd!!

But hey, I’ll lose weight fast this way I guess. Sigh…

Settling In

After my term as unofficial Tomato Head and going on a forced slimming diet because of food poisoning, I THINK my horrid wondrous welcome back home is finally looking up. My unpacking has finally ended and my room is actually looking pretty good, all purple-ly. I got my “dream” of a bigger screen for my computer and my brother sold me his older sound speakers for more surround sound effect!

The job hunt has begun and its not pretty.
